How do you paint a varnished dinning table black?

you have to sand down the table, prime it and then paint it!!How do you paint a varnished dinning table black?
It's already varnished ? so, you have to strip the varnish off first. Get ';Zip strip'; from Home Depot along with a pair of rubber gloves and some plastic.

After you cover the area, put the gloves on, then paint the entire top or the area your going to refinish with the Zip strip, wait the mentioned time, watch for bubbling. Then scrape off that layer. after you clean it, you may have to put more on, make sure it's clean to the base wood.

Make sure the wood is even, sanding will do with a block of wood to keep the paper flat or, a palm sander. Start with 60 grit, when you see some results, change to 120 grit. You want it baby-butt smooth.

After all this, than make sure it's sealed, the wood. Then you apply a good base primer, Home Depot can help you with this.

After the black paint, I always use a sprayer for a mirror like finish, in this case I'd use Black Lacquer, then the finish. Ace Hardware has a new two part resin like finish that has a very good quality, when it dries it's like glass. It's $15.00 a treatment.

Keep the kids away, the Zip Strip will cause blisters and the fumes. Good luck,How do you paint a varnished dinning table black?
No short cut i am afraid, you will need to strip it back to the wood sand it to desired finish then paint it.
Most likely, you have to first strip it (look for some varnish remover in a Home Depot kind of store), then lightly sand it, then paint.
Make sure you get a proper undercoat/sealer, or the paint will fail to 'take'.

Arnelite, is a product we have here. I think it is an American company.
Sand the varnish off first, otherwise the black wont stay there for long, thats if off course the paint doesn't just drip straight off.
SAND LIGHTLY, PRIME WITH SHELLAC BASED PRODUCT THEN PAINT
put a primer over it, and then paint with oil based paint. Or, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and they will tell you what to do.
I would put a primer coat on first, then the black coat. Primer helps the paint go on easier and won't bleed the old finish through it.
listen to keith
I like to spray, but then I have a commercial set up.

First thing to determine is if it is really ';varnish.'; If it is a commercially made table and never been DIY refinished, it's almost certainly not any kind of varnish. (some people think any clear finish is ';varnish'; and it's not). Some finishes in the last few years will not take a finish on top of them. Most finishes from commercial furniture is lacquer.

Clean it well, then scuff sand. If you need to brush, I'd recommend a good oil-based enamel.

If you can spray, I'd recommend a good pre-catalyzed lacquer.
paint
