..If finish is smooth enough, the liquid sandpaper should be sufficient. I would for economy of $$ %26amp; labor double prime coat with tinted primer...or plain white if that's close to final color. How do i paint a varnished door?
To paint over varnish you first have to sand the varnish so the paint will be able to stick.

There is a product called ';Liquid Sandpaper'; that is painted on the varnish. When it has dried you can paint over it.

Check with the people at your local paint store. They will be able to advise you.
I would suggest that you pretty much have to sand down the varnish,if you want the paint job to persevere
Scuff the surface down with sand paper to remove all of the gloss of the varnish. All of the varnish does not have to be off, just the gloss. Start with a medium grit paper then use a fine, to reduce scratches in the finish. Then use a good primer for wood surfaces and then paint with the paint of your choice.
