What paint will cover varnished wood?

I want to paint my daughters cot, but it's natural wood coated in varnish. What sort of paint will cover it? If not what can I do to remove the varnish? Someone suggested spray paint but I'd like something non toxic!!!

Thanks for your help!!What paint will cover varnished wood?
You need to rough up the surface - sand it - then use an enamel paint which will adhere to the surface. Do several light coats - allowing each to dry before the next coat - and you'll have a smooth, shiny surface. GOOD LUCK !!What paint will cover varnished wood?
My advice to you is to use some paint stripper to get rid of the varnish and then try to paint it whatever color you would like to paint it.
The first guy was right, but you can probably use an enamel paint as well and go right over it without the sanding.
you need to sand and primer it

then you can use any latex based paint you want
The only way to paint over varnish and have it last is to sand with 100grit paper, then apply 2 coats of Kilz oil based fast dry primer. After that sand again with 200 grit paper and apply any type and color of paint you like.
If you use Kilz to prime it first, you should have no problem painting over it with the paint of your choice. I would still lightly sand it first, and lightly sand inbetween coats with a fine sandpaper.
