Is it ok to paint/varnish a crib?

i bought a second hand crib it is really nice but there are quite alot of chips at the feet and scratches along the sides!

its like there has maybe been some sort of varnish on it originally, is it ok just to re-varnish it?

if so what kind of paints/varnish is safe to use??Is it ok to paint/varnish a crib?
i suggest you sand down all the chips thoroughly and use some liquid sand paper over the entire crib before starting go to your local benjamin moore dealer they're really at the forefront at making enviormentally safe low odor ,low toxin paint products to be sure your baby will be safe and also yourself especially if your pregnant.(you can take a look at benjaminmoore.com)Is it ok to paint/varnish a crib?
Go to Paint store, let them know what you are painting, they will know what is safe to use. If you or lady is prego do it outside or with major ventilation even if you get cold doing it!
These days most paints and varnishes are lead-free, so it's okay to use them for kids' furniture.

Just make sure before you buy that the paint you like contains no lead.
