My flatmate and I are wanting to paint varnished wood wardrobes white. What is the best paint to use? Cheers?

I try to avoid painting wood that has any kind of stain or varnish because it will always chip easily.

You would need to rub the wood down with fine paper, prime, undercoat and gloss off. I use Leyland paint.

I've always been told by other tradesman to use Zinsser Bulls-Eye 1 2 3 primer, oil based undercoat and oil based top coat for varnish. My flatmate and I are wanting to paint varnished wood wardrobes white. What is the best paint to use? Cheers?
Once wood has been stained or varnished it is poor painting practice to try and paint them with normal wood paints. They are vulnerable to chipping, even when sand them well or even strip them. If you do, then abrade every square centimetre to provide some key for your paint. Knotting is pointless as the varnish will have sealed any knots. Don't put emulsion on them. Two coats of oil-based undercoat and one coat of gloss or two coats of satin (Dulux Satinwood). Any other paints are a waste of time in this situation. My flatmate and I are wanting to paint varnished wood wardrobes white. What is the best paint to use? Cheers?
I'd advise you to sand them down well then if there are any knots in the wood paint with a knot sealer then give the wardrobes a coat of EPS.After that you can apply whatever paint you like but satin might look best.

If you sand them down really well you might get away with just the knot sealer and then watered down emulsion to give them a bleached look. You can build it up with a few coats sanding lightly between each coat.
we used fine sanding paper to give a very light sanding, then used ';difficult surface primer'; cant remember if it was crown or dulux but b%26amp;Q and the like will have it, then we used Fired Earth (normal paint) over the top and looks great- we painted our kitchen units (the mellamine/vinyl covered type), if possible might be worth doing a test on a not visable part first....ps took a couple of coats of primer and 2-3 coats of white paint
You could use eggshell or satinwood paint.
