What's the best way to paint over varnished doors?

If you paint over the varnish, it will look like crap. You should strip it off first. If you don't mind your door looking like crap, at least sand it down really good and use oil based paint. What's the best way to paint over varnished doors?
Sand Paper on the old Finish. Sand Sand Sand! That is the best way to get a good finish on those doors. try a Light to Medium grade sand-paper though. What's the best way to paint over varnished doors?
Best and easiest sometimes compete -- go to your local Home Depot, Lowes or paint store and ask. There are probably new products on the market to solve this age-old problem. I think I have seen primer that can be applied over varnish before painting, but am not sure and do not know the name of the product.
You can sand it down or use liquid sander which you can buy at your hardware store to rough up the surface. Then paint over it . This way it doe not peel.
Sand the varnishing down (just to scuff it up)--wipe it down good with water with a little ammonia in it, let it dry. Then paint it with a good STAIN BLOCKER primer-sealer like BIN or KILZ--this is important, you don't want the varnish to seep under your finish coat (happened to me--a white door soon turned PINK!!! YUCK!). You might have to do 2 thin coats of the stain blocking primer. I like Kilz myself.

THEN you can put on a good coat of latex paint. You don't have to use oil and I do not recommend it!
You will have to prime the door first with a clear or white primer, sold where you buy the paint. After one coat of primer, you can paint the door and frame in the color of your choice. It is not necessary to sand the door before painting if you use primer. For best results, you probably should use an oil-based paint, rather than latex on a previously varnished surface.

There is a product you can purchased called ';Liquid Sand Paper';. When you use this product you will have to seal off the room because of the fumes or remove the door if you can. After this is done you should use Kilz primer. Then its time for your final coat. I did my house and it came out ok. If I had to do it over I would have put two coats of Liquid Sand Paper. Its a clear product and its hard to tell if you missed any spots. I finished up with a few spots on the wall where paint had blistered away from the varnish. Good Luck!!!
Scuff them up with sand paper and then wipe the door down with a cleanser{mr clean %26amp; water} Then go ahead and apply your paint. I hope this works for you. Rolling the paint works faster and better.
It's best to remove fthe varnish with chemicals you can find where you buy your paint first, but if you can't, use something like sandpaper to scratch the varnish deep so the new paint will be able to stay on. Use metal sandpaper or a metal scraper to realy rough up the varnish and wood before painting

Thanks. Nice to see you,

JB :)
