Any suggestions for using spar/marine varnish on a painted bench?

I have heard of issues of ';bubbling, brush marks, uneven cats, etc.





I have never worked with this before and am trying to get a nice ';glass'; like finish to protect the bench.





Any information would be helpful.

I would worry that the marine varnish would yellow. That might not matter, depending upon what color the bench is painted. I would use an exterior polyurethane that says 'non-yellowing' and water cleanup. Be sure to get the type of finish you want, gloss to flat. Poly is fairly easy to apply. Use a good brush and follow the directions. Put on at least two coats.
