Use a marine varnish which is for outdoor use. It holds up well. I would use a spray varnish.Can you apply varnish over house paint ?
You can, but I know that you must use an oilbase undercoat.

use clear urethane varnish is less compatible with other finishes

Acrylics are harder and last longer than oil based paint. No need to cover it, especially with varnish.
