The latest in paints are so advanced that you could basically use anything. I would go for a water based paint that is washable. Also look for something that is non toxic and with low odor. If it is a nice wood, maybe you could even settle to leave it natural wood instead of painting it again. Sanding it down is the big job, so whatever you choose will be the fun part.
