Yes just use a good primer first. Can a varnished wood ceiling be painted with white paint without removing the varnish.?
Yes I work in the paint, design industry. You would have to seal it off first, you could not paint straight on it will peal or chip etc it just wont adheid to the varnish. What can happen is if you have ever painted plastic and it goes blotchy and wont stick it can do a similar thing not every time but diffinatly can. There is a way around it though, there is a product called B.I.N. sealer it is made to go over varnish etc so that you don't have to strip it back and then you give that a bit of a sand and then your two top coats, of ceiling paint or water based enamel or wall paint as long as its good quality :)

Go to a paint shop and ask about it.
Behr (can be purchased at any Home Depot) has a primer that works over laminates. glass, and any other slick surface. It's in a purple can. Just apply this, then your paint color. Depending on the surface you are painting, you may want to finish with a few coats of poly (water based poly will not change the color painted, while oil based will change color to look amber-if using a white finish coat)
I would say yes but you will need to use a good primer prior to painting. Otherwise, your paint won't stick! My fav primer is Bullseye 123 but there are a lot of good quality primers out there! And make sure you do your surface prep such as cleaning, fixing holes or damaged areas. The dark color might be hiding things that will become very apparent when it's a light color!

Good Luck!
nope, they may peel off, first remove the varnish by paint remover or sandpaper it till some wood grain came up and paint it with enamel white or acrylic white paint
