I'm a new painter and I was experimenting with oil medium as a varnish. I didn't really know what i was doing when I painted a section of my oil painting with oil medium. I now notice that it is way to glossy for the look I want.
Can I put a matte varnish over the whole painting without making the previously gloss varnished section look weird? Or would i have to paint over the previously varnished section first? Can you put a different varnish over a previously varnished oil painting?
Sure. You can exchange matt or glossy or whatever the shin you want as varnish. Let's say that you regret putting glossy varnish on your painting, for it looks too shinny. You can lightly varnish it over with matt varnish. The result will be less glossy
