Paint or varnish remover. Get them at Home Depot.
umm your local Hardware store will know
varnish removerr.. paint sripper. but why repaint it? rub it down if it metal and then paint gun black

There's a few chemicals that will strip varnish. Check out your local hardware store. Ask the pimply faced kid at the paint department where the paint and stain removers are.
You might be able to use muriatic acid. Make sure you delute it with some water though!
You don't paint fireplaces. If it's the mantle or frame use Acetone.
