Can you paint over varnish cabinets?

Ok we are trying to sell our house and our kitchen is older. the cabinents and counter tops are all bright yellow. Is there any way to paint over varnish? I know if you just slap some paint on there it wont stick or it will just chip and scratch. We are literally on the tightest budget ever (trying to sell before bank forecloses), so even refacing is to expensive. So can i paint over it? or does anyone have any other ideas? Can you paint over varnish cabinets?
sand, wash with TSP and water, prime, than paint with a high quality paintCan you paint over varnish cabinets?
You can certainly paint over the cabinets, you will need to clean them very thoroughly, then lightly sand the existing paint (enough to rough it up a little) that way the new paint will adhere to your cabinets. You may want to use the same type of paint. I suggest you apply a couple of light coats for good coverage.

New hardware can also help you to dress up the kitchen a little without spending too much money.

When you remove the doors, be sure you number them so it will be easier to re-hang once they are painted.
Julie's answers are good, but I would add painting them with a good primer like ';kilz'; beore painting, if you can, spraying the paint is good, if you can good at it.

Sherwin williams store is good to go to and see samples of primer and paints.
ditto.
