you know you have to strip them first!
any other form of painting will come off very easily
do it the proper way first time it saves having to strip an extra layer of paint later!

You really need to strip old varnish off, i spent days stripping dark varnish from a hand carved side table to reveal beautiful wood under neath and used a clear varnish for a beautiful look. Believe me it is worth the effort.
