Where do I leagally dispose of old cans of paint/varnish/stain???

The house I bought has lots of old unusable cans of paint, varnish, and stain in the shed. Where do I go to leagally get rid of it???Where do I leagally dispose of old cans of paint/varnish/stain???
Check with your town's website, specifically the town's transfer station rules. They will let you know what can be done with the stuff. For latex, you should find that you can just open the cans, let it dry out, and then you can just toss in the trash. Not so for oils, polys. But there are avenues for such, varied by town.Where do I leagally dispose of old cans of paint/varnish/stain???
Previous answers are correct. Stain and varnish are considered ';hazardous waste';. We have semi annual waste events for that and one place in the area we can take them otherwise. They limit amounts though.

One trick for drying latex is to add cat litter. It will dry it almost overnight and then we can put it in with the regular garbage.
Remove the lids and let the paints dry, they can then be put into the trash.
Go to your hometown dump site
