How well does tempera paint work on unfinished wood products? Would it need any kind of varnish?

Tempra paint is horrible for projects that aren't disposable! It's water based and chalks after it dries. We always called it ';Liquid pastels'; in art class. I would recommend Acrylic Enamel for this application.

If you use Tempra, and apply a coat of varnish, it will most likely smear your paint and look awful! Acrylic Enamel will not need a varnish coat, as it will dry very hard and durable. A varnish would further protect it and the wood (if there's any bare wood left exposed), but is not necessary. How well does tempera paint work on unfinished wood products? Very poorly--it would need so many coats of sanding sealer you'd be dizzy--it's water-soluble and the pigment would flake right off.
