I want to paint a cabinet that has been thickly coated with varnish. How do I do that?

It has a lot of small details and I feel that just sandpapering it won't be enough. Thanks!I want to paint a cabinet that has been thickly coated with varnish. How do I do that?
Try to sand off as much of the varnish as possible. Use an electric hand held sander.

Then prime with white ENAMELAC paint. It's the ONLY paint that will cover enough so you are able to paint the cabinets.

When you are ready to paint use a MODIFIED EPOXY paint. This is a very good paint. Comes in wide variety of colors.

This is a slow process. Do not expect to sand, ENAMELAC and MODIFY EPOXY paint all in one day. Do it slowly, take your time. It will be worth the work and it will look beautiful!

Have patience, do a good job and then sit back and pat your back and say what a great job I did. GOOD LUCK!I want to paint a cabinet that has been thickly coated with varnish. How do I do that?
Talk this over with a good home supply (Home-Depot or Lowe's) or with a Paint store like Sherwin-Williams.

On HG TV, they use a power sander to take it down some and get it ready for a primer and new coats.

this seem to be the minimum number of steps you'll need.

A good varnish remover on the details and the use of a tooth brush should help also.
Rub organs on them until the gloss is removed, then proceed to burn them. When they are good and charred, slather it in yogurt, this should do the trick. ;)
Buy liquid sandpaper at the hardware store. It will work on the details.
Whats varnish???
Sand it then put primer on it, then paint it.
take sandpaper and just rough up the varnish and then paint it.
paint over it or get some varnish stripper take off varnish start from raw wood
couldn't you just use spray paint?
