Try ';Superstrip.'; Clean up with 000 steel wool and acetone. Should take everything off in one or two tries.
Zinsser makes a good line of removers, as does Parks. Just make sure the remover is for what you are removing. Paint removers, for example, often won't strip varnish, stain or polyurethane. Also, the longer you let the stripper sit, the better it will work. So if the product recommends a 15 minute wait, don't wait less than that, and it will have more time to work if you wait 20 or 30 minutes.
