What kinds of paint and varnish are best for granite?

An important headstones engraving has been painted in gold, but the paint is now wearing away after 16 years. I am thinking of filling in the paint and varnishing over the top. What kinds of paint and varnish are best for granite?
oil based paint is the key. hamerite is good, and has massive range of colours. beware of drips thought as this would be difficult to remove as stone is pourus. as for the varnish, a good yaught top coat would be ideal, available in matt and gloss finishes. all can be found in hardware stores. What kinds of paint and varnish are best for granite?
There are now special paints made for painting stone or other things that will be exposed to weather. Look for them in a good craft supplies store.
N.C. Clear Lacquer for top coat.
