What varnish to use to paint over emulsion paint?

Evening all, Ive painted some table legs/ cupboards etc with an off white emulsion paint. I want to protect them from chipping etc, so was adviced to use a water based varnish. Just started to varnish and it now looks like Im a heavy smoker..lol..It has gone a yellow/brown colour. Or has anyone got any advice on what best to use to help protect the paint from chipping (being used in a Tea room so needs to be hard wearing)

Thank you, ClaireWhat varnish to use to paint over emulsion paint?

they'll do it at your local DIY store too

Laquer does the job too you can by that as spray or brush on, gives it a plastic coating %26amp; all stains just wipe off. : )What varnish to use to paint over emulsion paint?
Oil based pure matt varnish.
Water based varnish ? = Some pratt.

Any oil based varnish can be used, matt/satin/gloss.
You can get a spray lacquer from hardware shops.Make sure you spray in a well ventilated area.hope i helped.
you should have used B.I.N primer (red tin-shellac based from b%26amp;q) for your first coat and then used an oil based eggshell paint to finish. this would have gave you a perfect finish and would not chip off. dont worry you can still follow this process over your emulsion paint.this would withstand many a cup and saucer.
Yacht varnish is dead good but I think you've not left them to dry properly?
all varnish will slightly yellow your paint i'm affraid.

you can get a matt varnish, wilko's own brand, that dries and you cant even see it. i presume you were using gloss before, gloss is the bad one for yellowing.

yaught varnish or floor varnish are the hardest wearing. ask at your local b%26amp;q for a brand that yellows the least. try it out on a small area and if it goes yellow, take it back, saying you were miss sold it.
